I haven't posted here in awhile. So i figured I would.
(1) If you haven't see it, I Have been posting regularly over at my song a day blog.
http://songaday365.blogspot.com/
(2) I've been doing some hardcore house work for my mom the last 48 hours. Landscaping, Exterior Painting, etc.
Now i know why they call farmers and rural folks red necks.
My Scot-Irish skin can't handle the heat. I'm so burnt ... it hurts.
And i dropped my cell phone in a clogged gutter.
That sucked.
So there's my update.
Words.

Easter
Happy Easter!
T'was a good day. If you call playing drums for 2 hours with your kid sister, and eating dinner with Jane's family, and then napping in Jane's parents living room for 2 hours a good day!
Meh, was a good day.

Wireless Routers
are lame.
Also -
i bought Jane the British version of Planet Earth and it rocks so hard.
The discovery channels (all the educational TV) needs some HD now. The standard channels are often fuzzy and just not crisp enough.
Watching Planet Earth in full focus HD crispness is sexy.
Also, the British version as narrated by David Attenborough (as opposed to Sigorney Weaver) makes it sound more intelligent (as British accents usually do).
the only critic i have is that the score is different in the British version versus the American version, and so far i like the American score better.
40$ used and worth every cent.

Birthday Drums Stuff.
Today is my mom's birthday.
Happy birthday mom!
I made her an awesome meal and did the dishes. Not much, but money's tight and she appreciated it.
I also played drums (my sister has a set) for about 15 minutes.
This was much to Jane's dismay. She had never sat so close to a drum set before.
And i'm terrible at them (for now).
She forbade me from having drums in the house...
so i'll just sneak them in later.

New Things!
2 things:
(1) http://songaday365.blogspot.com/ is my other blog ... if you haven't seen it. Read it, contribute, and love it.
(2) I figured out how to rotate my desktop display (i had to update my graphic card drivers) and now i can flip my monitor (one of those fancy dell flat screens that rotate to a portrait position) and read PDF's in a much better fashion.

Lunatics.
Let me paint a picture for you. With words. (I'm neither articulate or a good painter, so hold on to your seats.)
Monday night 1:00 am, I'm in bed but not asleep. Jane is in her bed and is a sleep.
A heavy pounding on a door from downstairs grabs my attention. Brody (my dog) goes nuts. Quickly getting dressed I grab Brody from Jane's room, and head downstairs.
My thoughts: something happened (dunno what) and it's the neighbors at my door.
Reality: still not sure, leaning towards crack head.
I move the curtain from the front door window and a black man, about my height with short hair and poor teeth is standing at my front door.
Allow me to clarify the previous statement. I have an enclosed porch with a screen door. This guy had bypassed the screen door and walked onto my porch and pounded on my house door, at 1:00 am on a Monday night.
We exchange some words, basically this:
me: can i help you
him: is (garbled name here) there?
me (clearly pissed): you got the wrong house bro
him: oh? you sure (garbled name here) isn't there?
me: its one in the morning, you got the wrong house! (i may have used some explatives...)
him: (incoherent)
and he leaves.
The name could have been Rob, Ryan, Wayne ... or something else I'm not really sure.
But after our exchange, and my dog doing everything short of busting through the door and using the dude as a chew toy, he left.
Got in his car and took off.
I called the cops, told them what had transpired and asked them to send a patrol car to scope out the neighborhood.
I mean what the hell!
Giving the man the benefit of the doubt, and saying he was just lost... who pounds on the front door (instead of the porch door) at 1 in the frigging morning on a Monday.
I'm assuming he was drunk or stoned, but i can't say for sure.
Let's just say I'm not pleased by the prospect of lunatics pounding on my door at 1 am.

Gah Spring!
Screw Spring. Seriously.
I'll preface with, i didn't rake in the fall, and I'm fairly confident my landlord only partially raked the following fall. That said:
At first winter sucked; my yard was covered in leaves and the snow never looked pretty (except in heavy amounts of snow cases) because the dead leaves poked through the snow cover. Then when ever snow would thaw, my basement would leak. A little at first, then more and more, until one of the basement 'side rooms' (about 8' x 4') began filling too about an inch deep before overflowing into the rest of the basement.
At first i thought this was in part due to the leaves, and a lack of filtration, because the back yard was essentially a lake, with it's own swamp monster to boot!
Then spring came. And ruined everything.
I spent the bulk of our first warm weekend being a legitimate adult by doing yard work.
I filled 9 bags with yard refuse (90% leaves) and still have about 9 more bags to fill from around the garage, the side of the drive way, under the deck, and the front of the house.
But the central area of the backyard lake was cleared.
Then came the rain (a pivotal part of spring I'm told) and ravaged my backyard, and basement.
It was like Neptune himself took up residence in my basement, and then left and stiffed me on the rent.
Except not that bad.
So this rant rounds back out to my original point, screw spring.
Bring on the unbearably hot summer weather. Please.

Words about Words
Two interesting things of note:
(1) I was at the library today catching up with old friends, it rocked. Also, say a prayer and wish me luck, as i have applied for another PSA position with the library and I would be STOKED to have it!
(2) Hi Abbey. (I'm pirating your random link's philosophy, though yours are far superior!)
(3) Notice the '4th' comment on my "You Can Weld Right?" post ... I'm fairly confident that i have no idea who that person is. Which means, someone i don't know has read my blog (or at least glanced at it.) Which totally tickles my fancy!
(4) NPR is doing their pledge drive right now... and this sucks. Yes donating to public radio is a good thing, and if i had expendable income i would. However, even if i did, they wouldn't end the pledge drive early... so they still interrupt my programing! It is very bothersome (though i suppose admittedly necessary) and i have resorted to listening to 92.3 in lieu of NPR at work. 92.3's reformatting isn't terrible... and reminded me today just how much i enjoy 90's rock; mmm silver chair and the toadies... you know what i mean nick!

Yum, New Music...
SO i love Jazz...
jazz overnight, on 90.3 is like a meditative orgasm for me.
Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, damn near anything on Blue Note Records...
Admittidly, i'm not as well versed as most on Jazz:
i had to looks up spellings for this blog, I had to check WCPN's Jazz overnight playlist for names
But that does nothing to diminsh my love of the sound. Pure. Raw.
SO i love Hip Hop...
it's true. No not rap. Rap is poison. Hip Hop is intelligent, creative, pure, raw... see a pattern? Hip Hop is a new generations Jazz. That same kid who chilled listening to Miles Davis has a grandchild chilling listening to Blackalicious.
Or Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Del the Funky Homosapien, Pharoh Monch, Lupe Fiasco.
The only real disparity between hip hop and jazz for me is that Hip Hop artists have a hard time seperating themselves from rap. And unfortunatly, the two genres blend too much in some instances.
BUT!
THE POINT!!
A few fantastic people have seen what i see! Jazz and Hip Hop are related; a parent and a child!
And it's high time someone learned to blend the two!
Guru, of Gangstarr, created something called Jazzmataz: a collabrative project of old generation and new generation, hip hop over horns if you will. Hip Hops great lyrical skills paired with jazz's prominent sounds.
Us 3 is another fantastic blending of sounds. They are a Blue Note Records group that has really put a lot of work into the honest blend of hip hop and jazz.
I promise you... you will not be dissappointed by this rap/jazz; hiphop/jazz; spokenword; jazz/hiphop/funk ... and then some.
Blue Note Records
Us3 ft. Shabaam Sahdeeq - Sheep (Musical Sampling)
Jazzmatazz
Us3
Guru's Jazmatazz ft. Common and Bob James - State of Clarity (Musical Sampling)

Us3 - I Got It Goin' On (Musical Sampling)

The CMA
So on Sunday i dragged a handful of friends to the Cleveland Museum of Art to get some culture.
This is a new regularly scheduled event i think I'd like to do; go get some of that elusive culture.
So the Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the top art museums, and is my favorite based on the sole factor that it is free. It has recently been under MASSIVE renovations, and only has a portion of it's great galleries currently open (with several more scheduled to open every couple off months starting in June and leading until 2012). A nice factor is that their special exhibits (which usually have a nominal fee) have been increasingly cheaper or free during this construction phase.
So, a few things of note occurred during this trip.
(1) Nathan was quite impressed with armor being referred to as Maximilian in style based entirely on the fact that Maximilian was the ruler at the time... Thus, he opted to call everything he encountered that was created in his lifetime Finkbonian.
I assure you this did not get old. (Seriously ... this is a Finkbonian blog)
(2) I learned Jane likes modern art. Win.
(3) I also learned that Steve is an uncultured philistine. (Not Really)
(4) And lastly, Nathan, Steve, and I are apparently unable to get too much culture at any given time because the entire ride home we made multiple jackass statements, all in the RAGE-MINOTAUR voice.
But, you should all (you being Nick, and any unfortunate soul who stumbles upon this blog) go to the art museum and get your own culture.

Nick - You're a Jerk
There. Read that.
My intertubes was out for a few days - and i'm lagging behind in posts.
But for now i will go eat free food and watch the Cardinals get crushed. sad face.
More blog to come including:
*why i hate assholes who drive 60 MpH on unplowed highways.
*photos of Brett Tatar's wedding.
*a photo montage of Ryan Branch with strangers, even if you don't know him it's worth it.
*oh yes, and some pictures of my puppies.
In the mean time, i leave you with this:

So people have been bugging me to see some photo's of the new house. I figured christmas would be a good time to snap some shots, with the house being festive and relativly clean.
Here you are, Christmas a la Matt (& Jane).

Music you should listen to...
No seriously.
As the "a blog" post implies this was originally intended to be an email for a few friends whom i thought would be interested. But now, you all (the many readers i have ...) get to sit through it.
There Are 5 bands worth listening to. Yes you may have heard them before. Listen again.
Furthermore, these bands are all interconnected. I know right?
Lastly perhaps you'll say, "oh that's not my style of music".
Wrong.
I'm hear to broaden your horizons. One look at my Ipod will show you my eclectic musical tastes. A song for every second.
Musical Style is cyclical.

If you like rock? listen to country. you like country? listen to hip-hop. you like hip-hop? listen to jazz. you like jazz? listen to blues. you like blues? listen to rock.
You may say, "Matt that's crazy, what about other music, like metal or punk?" or you may say, "Matt your crazy, hip-hop and country?"
Try it.
Figure out where sub genres fit (I'd put metal and punk in the rock category), some music spans multiple genres.
Hip-Hop to country? Yup ... most rap (not to be confused with hip hop, but that's a different argument) and most country musicians sing about the same things. Breaking girls hearts (or having hearts broken), drinking alcohol, and driving cars (or trucks).
I'm right you know it.
Anyway - the point is, broaden your musical horizons.
Back to the original post...
5 bands you need to listen to more.
The White Stripes
The Black Keys
The Greenhornes
Holly Golightly
The Raconteurs
Now for the interconnectedness:
The Black Keys are based out of Akron, OH and the Greenhornes are based out of Cincinnati, OH. The Greenhornes have opened for the Black Keys (at least once.)
Holly Golightly and The Greenhornes collaborated on a song "There is an End" for the film Broken Flowers. (which i have not seen.)
Two of the members of the Greenhornes and Jack White of the White Stripes created a side project called The Raconteurs (along with Brendan Benson who didn't make the '5 bands you should listen to' cut).
Now, finally, to make it a little easier i have links to a handful of my favorite (or close to it) songs by said bands:
The White Stripes - Dead Leaves and a Dirty Ground
The Black Keys - Busted
The Black Keys - Heavy Soul - sound quality is poor, find yourselves a solid studio version of this cut.
The Greenhornes - Shame and Misery
The Greenhornes & Holly Golightly - There is an End - from the film Broken Flowers
Holly Golightly - Tell me now so i know - supposedly written by Ray Davies originally, but never released.
Holly Golightly - Walk a Mile
The Raconteurs - Steady as She Goes - the song that prompted the forming of the band.
The Raconteurs - Bang Bang - a live cover of Nancy Sinatra; they do a lot of nice live covers.
The Raconteurs - Blue Veins

a blog
omg. There, now that that is out of the way. I can get on with this whole blogging thing. Which i may or may not keep up on. Because as you probably know, I'm an ego-maniac. Thus, unless you shower me with praise, or at the very least comment, regularly read, and discuss my blog; i will cease to do it.
That said, the motivation for creating this blog is two-fold. First; i was about to send out an e-mail to a few friends about some music (see following post) and figured it would be more productive to have them visit my blog for said info. Second; i sit at work all day and listen to NPR (mmm brain food, or brain washing depending on how conservative you are.) and when I come home from work i always have something to say about some happening around the globe, but no one to talk to. Since I'm not a doctor (more specifically a PhD.) yet i don't have a group of mind-starved students to talk at for an hour, so I'll blog instead.
Also I can utilize my blog to keep in touch with blah blah blah.
So read on, and listen to me rant (at least one posting ... perhaps more).
