SO i love Jazz...
jazz overnight, on 90.3 is like a meditative orgasm for me.
Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, damn near anything on Blue Note Records...
Admittidly, i'm not as well versed as most on Jazz:
i had to looks up spellings for this blog, I had to check WCPN's Jazz overnight playlist for names
But that does nothing to diminsh my love of the sound. Pure. Raw.
SO i love Hip Hop...
it's true. No not rap. Rap is poison. Hip Hop is intelligent, creative, pure, raw... see a pattern? Hip Hop is a new generations Jazz. That same kid who chilled listening to Miles Davis has a grandchild chilling listening to Blackalicious.
Or Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Del the Funky Homosapien, Pharoh Monch, Lupe Fiasco.
The only real disparity between hip hop and jazz for me is that Hip Hop artists have a hard time seperating themselves from rap. And unfortunatly, the two genres blend too much in some instances.
BUT!
THE POINT!!
A few fantastic people have seen what i see! Jazz and Hip Hop are related; a parent and a child!
And it's high time someone learned to blend the two!
Guru, of Gangstarr, created something called Jazzmataz: a collabrative project of old generation and new generation, hip hop over horns if you will. Hip Hops great lyrical skills paired with jazz's prominent sounds.
Us 3 is another fantastic blending of sounds. They are a Blue Note Records group that has really put a lot of work into the honest blend of hip hop and jazz.
I promise you... you will not be dissappointed by this rap/jazz; hiphop/jazz; spokenword; jazz/hiphop/funk ... and then some.
